Other than Mr. Pastorius himself, who are your favourite bass players?
...I'm a bassist... |

| Victor Wooten, saw him live a little bit ago he was unbelievable. I also like Flea, Bootsy Collins, Anthony Jackson, and Manring. To tell you the truth Jaco isn't really my favorite. |

| Victor, Ron Carter, and Bobby Sheehan. Not Billy Sheehan, Bobby is the late bassist for Blues Traveler. Check out Blues Travelers Live From The Fall album for some great improv rock bass lines........ |

2. Vic Wooten 3. Marcus Miller 4. Niels-Henning Örsted Pedersen (Danish upright bass player, probably the best there is) 4. Rocco Prestia 5. Stan Clarke 6. Steve Rodby
I dig Steve Swallows tone too but I haven´t listened very much to him so I dont refer to him as a favourite of mine.

So no - one is left in awe by the likes of MARK KING ????? I mean, come on - I know he isn't totally jazz orientated, but level 42 practcally started the british funk movement. You say others can slap, but listen to his live solos - he basically invented some of the widely used; and even what we would class as "mainstream" bass techniques of today. I can sympathise with everyone's selection of classic bassists, but I know that in everyone's hearts, there's a little mark king slapping away.

I highly recommend checking out Chris Tarry. His solo stuff as well as his work with Metalwood and Junction are all well worth a serious listen. His site has some excellent MP3s. The cat can play.
He can be found at http://www.christarry.com/
I just got "Bent" by Gary Willis. Very tasty. His website is a 'little different' but maybe a work in progress.
Dann Glenn is another cat to check out. He is "pretty far out" but can most certainly lay it down. Interesting guy to correspond with too but be warned, he doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Re; Mark King, it's wonderful to note that he's getting better as time goes on. I saw him a few months ago, and there were all the usual tricks in his solos, but some extra things as well that put something of a smile on my face.
